Abstract

The literature on occupational stress is traditionally marked by a focus on aspects of the worker's task or occupation, neglecting organizational stressors. This paper aimed to propose a concept, to develop and to present validity evidence of a stress scale exclusively involving organizational characteristics as potentially stressors. Two quantitative studies were carried out. In the first study, the initial version of the Organizational Stress Scale (OES) was submitted to judges and semantics analysis, totaling 60 items. The EEO was applied in person to 454 workers and submitted to exploratory factor analysis. In the second study, the resulting version of the EEO was applied in person to 501 workers and submitted to confirmatory factor analysis. The first study revealed a structure with four factors: organizational decisions, support, incentive to competition and barriers to professional growth, and 32 items. The second study indicated an instrument with 25 items and the aforementioned factors, with satisfactory adjustment indices (χ2/gl=2.95, RMSEA=.06, TLI=.91, CFI=.92 e SRMR=.04). The studies showed promising results, proposing a new concept and an instrument to assist in organizational diagnosis and promote studies to promote healthier and more productive organizations.

Doutora em Psicologia pelo Instituto de Psicologia da Universidade de São Paulo. Possui Pós-Doutorado pela Faculdade de Ciências Políticas e Sociologia da Universidade Complutense de Madrid.(2008).
