Abstract

Abstract: Obesity, one of the major global public health problems, is associated with gut microbiota, whose alterations can influence metabolism and disease predisposition. Strategies such as regulating the microbiota through diet and using probiotics and prebiotics have shown promise in controlling obesity. Objective: To analyze the relationship between obesity and gut microbiota through a literature review. Methodology: This literature review aims to analyze and investigate how gut microbiota is related to obesity. Results: After reading the abstracts and results, an evaluation of the initially selected 15 articles was performed, with 5 being excluded from the total. Discussion: Studies indicate that gut microbiota has a significant influence on obesity, affecting metabolic and physiological functions such as fat distribution, nutrient absorption, and lipid metabolism. It has also been reported that an increase in the ratio of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes bacteria may be present in microbiota alterations favoring obesity. Finally, the possible effects of probiotic use as an adjunct method to restore gut microbiota integrity were presented. Conclusion: Therefore, based on the results obtained in this study, it was possible to confirm that gut microbiota plays a fundamental role in the treatment and prevention of various pathologies, with emphasis on obesity.
